Zama Public Library General Information

Opening Hours

  • Tuesday through Friday 9:00a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, Sunday and holidays 9:00a.m. until 5:00p.m.
  • Reference room 9:00a.m. until 5:00p.m.
  • Children Reading room 9:00a.m. until 5:00p.m.

Days Closed

  • Mondays. (Only open if Monday is national holiday and the following Tuesday is closed)
  • First Friday of month inventory (only open if first Friday is a public holiday and second Friday is closed)
  • Special inventory

Community Center and District Center Library

Applying for a Library Card

You need to register at the circulation desk to borrow books and magazines.

Requirements to be a library card holder

  • Any person who lives, works or attends school in Zama.
  • Any person who lives in Atsugi, Isehara, Hadano, Yamato, Ayase, Sagamihara, Ebina, Aikawa, and Kiyokawa.

  • Students, Faculty and staff of partner universities; Nihon University College of Bioresource sciences and Joshibi University of Art and Design
  • Anyone permitted by a director of the library.
  • The library card can be used at all libraries in Zama (ZAMASHI KOMINKAN, KITA-CHIKU BUNKA CENTER,HIGASHI-CHIKU BUNKA CENTER and Mobile Library “Himawari-go”).

Fee

Service charge is free.

Eligibility Requirements

  • You need to present identification card such as Health insurance card, Driver’s license, Residence card or Student ID to confirm your address and name.

Students, Faculty and staff of partner universities also need to present their ID.

Borrowing Items

Bring materials you would like to check out to the circulation desk with your library card.

When you borrow DVDs or videotapes, select paper boards from the DVD-videotape’s section and bring them with your library card to the circulation desk.

Books/Magazines

  • there is no limit,You can borrow as many as you can read within 2weeks.

Comic book

  • Up to 10 comic books

DVD/Video

  • Up to 3 DVDs or videos

Returning Items

Please bring borrowed materials to the circulation desk. You do not need to show your library card for return.
When you finish ,piease put materials in the book truck.

Where to return

  • *Please return the materials to the book drop at the entrance of the main library when the library is closed.
  • *Please do not return the following materials to the book drop.
    DVD, Video, materials borrowed from other libraries, library card and “Request /Reservation form”
  • *If you lost or broke materials on loan, you may be fined for the damage.

Finding Books

OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog)

OPAC is a system for searching books in the library.
There are 5 OPACs and 2 OPACs for children in the main library.
One OPAC in each District Center and ZAMASHI KOMINKAN.

Extend Loan Period

Loan period can be extended by 6 times within 3 months.
You can renew materials at the circulation desk, by telephone or through the library website.

The following materials cannot be renewed.

  • Reserved materials
  • Overdue materials
  • Extend loan period more than 6 times

Reserve Items

You can reserve books and magazines on loan and also can request materials which are unavailable in our library.
Fill out the “Request/Reservation form” and submit it to the circulation desk. Once the request material has been ready, you will be notified.
You can also reserve materials on the OPAC and through the library website (only if materials are available in our library)

Books/Magazines

Up to 5 requests at the circulation desk or by telephone.
Up to 20 requests through the library website (requests can only be made through the library website if materials are available in our library)

Comic book

Up to 5 requests at the circulation desk or by telephone.
Up to 10 comics through the library website (requests can only be made through the library website if materials are available in our library)

DVD/Video

Up to 3 DVDs or videos (requests can only be made if materials are available in our library)

Important points for reservation

Materials which are unavailable in our library can be requested from other libraries in Kanagawa prefecture or will be newly purchased.
Requests cannot be made for some reasons will be notified.

  • Materials which are unavailable in our library cannot be reserved on the OPAC or through the library website.
  • Requests for exercise books and reference books are not accepted.

When the request books and DVDs
are ready

Come to pick up your materials at the circulation desk within a week from the date of contact. (You need your library card)
Reserved materials may be cancelled if you do not come to borrow after one week.

Cancel Request Items

How to cancel request books and DVDs on the library website:

  1. Enter the number of your library card and your password through “User’s page”. ( Password can be issued on the library website or at the circulation desk)
  2. Click “Request list” and your list will show up then click “cancel” *When the request book is already secured, you cannot cancel it on the library website. Please call the library to cancel.
